Who could imagine a speakeasy in a church basement?
A musician, or three or four. Especially if one of them is a member of the church.
And so was born a downtown pop-up jazz club called Woodfield Jazz at First-St. Andrew’s United Church.
“I’m always looking at rooms and wondering if this would be a good venue for jazz,” said singer Sonja Gustafson, one of the venue’s organizers.
In January 2018, she performed a fundraiser for ELUCO (East London United Church Outreach) at her own church, First-St. Andrew’s. The original plan was to use the sanctuary, but Gustafson asked if the lower hall could be set up like a nightclub with tables and a bar.
